Yesterday's story on Audlem Online has attracted emails and Chatbox comments galore. It seems that Royal Mail has some serious problems to address.

It's not just late Christmas cards. The mail matters because vital hospital appointments are made using the post – one such case is on the Chatbox. That old favourite, "The cheque is in the post", could be fatal to a local company's cash flow! It seems, at present, we have a mail service that is not fit for purpose.

And it's not just a matter of post being a few days late – it's thirty days or more late. And, perhaps, just not turning up! The Victorians who founded this vital service would be shocked by what has happened.

Richard Scott writes: "Hi Audlem Online Team – Just logged in to see your comments abour Royal Mail. I have just finished contacting Royal Mail about the poor service. Items sent on 7th December have just got to me today. Not just one or two but lots of it, all posted well before Christmas. Bad weather cannot be used as excuse either as all of it disptached from within 60 mile radius to Audlem!

"I would encourage others to report it to Royal Mail via their very well hidden reporting site on their website. In the search box type Report and range of options comes up.

"I am also contacting Edward Timpson, as although not our MP, he is the one for Crewe and Nantwich and fought the closure of the Crewe sorting office and has also been dealing with Royal Mail over the recent issues of this poor service. And definately concur not down to Audlem Post Office or local posties who are brilliant team."

Sylvia Stead concurs, saying: "I have just come home from shopping to find two Christmas cards in my post and one yesterday. None of the envelopes had been franked. It's a disgrace and no help to our lovely local postal service – please don't shout at them as it's all to do with Warrington."

Dave Martin adds: "Have just received a card posted in Birmingham (UK, not Alabama!) on 21st December. At twenty days, "snail mail" is being unkind to a snail."

There are many more comments on the Chatbox. Audlem Online will contact the Royal Mail to ask for a formal comment which we will publish. To the shame of the Mail, this correspondence might have to be conducted electronically to avoid having to wait weeks for a posted reply!

But maybe, just maybe, we will write and post a letter! Just to see what happens!
