This week's Chronicle reports that the plans for a new toll motorway through South Cheshire have been scrapped. The M6 Expressway was to have been built on land running parallel to the existing motorway from north of Birmingham to near Knutsford at a projected cost of £3.5 billion, almost double the original estimate of £2 billion. After facing massive opposition and escalating costs, The Highways Agency has now opted to widen the M6 by one additional lane in each direction. There will inevitably be disruption during the £3 billions of widening work, although probably less than for the Expressway. How much impact that will have on roads used as an alternative to the already congested M6, including those through Audlem, remains to be seen.
