"LOOKING BACK" A lifetime experience over 90 years

Memories can, at times, be a little indistinct as we get older. Not so, it
seems, for this week’s speaker at Audlem Probus Club for retired businessmen and women.

Our own Geraint Davies will talk us through more than 90 years of anecdotes from his life, ranging from early schoolboy antics to becoming a teacher himself, to singing at the London Palladium, and much more.

Geraint is known throughout Audlem and neighbouring communities for his superb performances as a baritone with Audlem Voices Choir, even now at the age of 93.

What may not be generally known is that he once sang with fellow Welsh-born singer, Harry Secombe, at the London Palladium. He also performed with the UK Youth Choir at a World Fair in Brussels.

All this after early schooldays full of very varied and contrasting experiences.

Geraint was raised in the shadow of Snowdon. “My memories of primary school are both pleasant and unhappy,” he says. “Clouts round the ear for being cheeky were not unknown. I even got into bother with one teacher for something I said which I’d intended to be helpful.

Thankfully, a teacher during his secondary schooldays kick-started what was to become a very fulfilling career for Geraint: “That teacher of English was so inspirational that I became an English and Physical Education teacher myself, working in the UK and Canada.”

A second major life-change followed: “I was introduced to skiing, and that was to have a major influence on my life.”

Join us this Thursday to hear snippets of the tales that so enthralled Geraint’s grandchildren they urged him to write his autobiography: 'Looking Back: Anecdotes and Memories of My Life Over 90 Years'.
