With the world's most powerful physics experiment getting underway near Geneva, Audlem resident George Beaman gives his thoughts on the experiment in the Articles & Views section on the Homepage.

Engineers are attempting to circulate a beam of particles around the 27km-long underground tunnel which houses the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The £5bn machine on the Swiss-French border is designed to smash particles together with cataclysmic force. This, we are told, will re-create conditions in the Universe moments after the Big Bang.

Curiously, demonstrating a tenuous link with logic, there are reports that some scientists have received death threats saying: "We will kill you if you destroy the world with this experiment!"

George's thoughts on the experiment are, we are pleased to report, more considered.
