At a meeting between Shropshire Union Canal users and British Waterways staff on Thursday 15th October, Parish Councillors Pam Seddon and Bill Consterdine put Audlem's case for retaining long-stay linear moorings on the canal.

They stressed that the village needs to retain its 20 long-stay moorings for the sake of village businesses which need the trade they bring; for users who currently rent the moorings from BW and who prefer to have a choice between canal-side moorings and marinas; and to maintain the attractive look of the canal for Audlem's many visiting tourists.

The official response from BW was that they intend to stick to their national policy of reducing one linear mooring for every 10 new off-line berths created in marinas within 30 miles of the new marina and within 12 months of it opening.

After discussion with a BW official, it was agreed that Audlem Parish Council would invite Sally Ash (BW's Head of Boating Development) to an on-site meeting to discuss the issue further. The meeting will be attended by representatives of village businesses and canal users together with representatives of the Parish Council. The intention is to explain the depth of feeling as demonstrated by the petition presently gathering signatures in the village shops, and press for BW to relax its strict reduction policy as far as Audlem is concerned.

A further report will appear on Audlem Online after the meeting has taken place.
