The lights went out across Audlem yesterday – about 10,000 of them – as the fantastic Christmas illuminations were dismantled and removed.
A team of ADAS volunteers worked hard and long in very windy conditions to take down the big tree in the Square and over fifty smaller trees on public buildings and private homes throughout the centre of the village.
All agree the village has looked a picture with lights in larger trees on the approaches to Audlem village centre adding to the display.
The magnificent Christmas tree in the Square was donated to the village by Geoff and Olive Stretch from their garden and kindly sponsored by Norman & Trixie Bonell.
Many of their friends, and also customers at Williams Newsagents, also know of Olive's constant anxiety about its 'look', and her great sadness at what is now its demise.
The big tree lives on, however. As regular readers will recall, local artist Ronnie Cruwys' painting shows it at its best – see illustration – a fine festive present to Olive and Geoff which will remind them of their tree for years to come.
