With the centenary of the Titanic disaster this month, there comes news of a tightening of lifeboat regulations for all vessels.
The huge loss of life when the Titanic hit an iceberg in April 1912 was due in large part to insufficient lifeboat provision.
Successive UK Governments have been working on a new Safety on the Water Code of Practice (SotWCoP) ever since which has been published today.
This has resulted in passenger boats as small as Audlem Lass now having to carry, or if too small, tow a lifeboat.
Audlem Lass‘ new lifeboat, still awaiting its livery and the installation of the legally-required bells and whistles, has just been delivered and can be seen attached to the Lass at the Overwater Marina pontoon.
A spokesperson for OffSure, the regulatory agency that will enforce lifeboat provision under SotWCoP, said: “It’s taken a longer time than initially planned in 1912, but we believe all who sail the oceans, seas, rivers, canals, lakes, streams, brooks (burns in Scotland) and ponds of the world in UK registered vessels of any size will welcome this new regulatory regime which comes into force today.”
