I love giving meaningful gifts and whilst the superb selection of shops Audlem offers serve my gift giving needs extremely well, in this instance I was looking for a specific gift so I went to my favourite department store, Liberty London (online).
Liberty of London gains its status in my eyes not only because of the individual designs of the items it sells but because of its notable architecture and heritage. Opened in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the son of a draper, Liberty of London has become most associated as a purveyor of fine fabric goods (i.e. the eponymous Liberty print). Oscar Wilde once described Liberty as the "chosen resort of the artistic shopper".

Liberty has championed and collaborated with British fabric producers throughout its history. I was looking for a classic silk pocket handkerchief and I had an array of designs to choose from. I settled on a monochromatic design in silk twill produced in a silk factory in Macclesfield. I was even more delighted by the local connection to a producer in Cheshire and then I noticed the name of the design I had chosen: The 'Audlem' pocket square. This one little detail would mean little to so many, but meant so much to me. It was perfect.

Maybe the message to be taken from this experience is to always keep it local as clearly all searches lead to Audlem. Failing that, I'll also continue to head to Liberty, which will always hold a special place for me.

Liberty of London is based on Regent Street, London. It has recently reopened its doors following Covid-19 restrictions.
