Happy New Year

As we approach the end of 2018 it is a good time to look back over the last year and take stock of what has happened in our community and country.

Locally we have seen a number of changes, with a new Chief Fire Officer, Mark Cashin, joining and Tracy Bullock, who led our local NHS in mid-Cheshire, leaving for pastures new. This is a prime opportunity to thank all the hard working public servants in Eddisbury who keep us safe and well.

As for my own office, we've had a busy year. We have dealt with almost 10,000 pieces of correspondence, alongside helping hundreds of people with more substantial problems ranging from housing to farm payments. As ever, if there is anything I can do to help you please do not hesitate to contact my constituency office on 01606 861 300.

We have seen steady progress in some of my campaigns, such as rural broadband. More and more people are recognising that the current system for rolling out broadband is not working for rural communities. Likewise I have spent all year fighting tooth and nail with HS2 to get them to release information about their plans to those who will be affected. I am pleased to say I have helped progress a number of compensation claims with HS2 and will continue to fight to make sure local people are not blighted by a mismanaged and poorly thought out railway line ploughing through our beautiful countryside.

In Westminster too I've been working hard. Most recently I've been leading a campaign to ensure that those people who have invested in solar panels receive a fair price for the electricity they produce. Likewise I've been fighting for funding for energy efficiency to ensure that everyone can have a warm home without sky high energy bills.

I'm proud to have helped pass landmark legislation this year, such as the energy price cap, a ban on zombie knives and other dangerous weapons, and the EU Withdrawal Act which legislated for us to leave the EU next year. This all comes alongside record high employment rates and tax cuts for 39,000 of my constituents. While Brexit occupies a huge amount of the newspapers' time and attention, the reality for MPs is that it is one of a number of issues we deal with every day. Quietly, in the background to Brexit, we have been getting on with building a stronger economy, supporting our schools, hospitals and police force, and trying to make the lives of hard working people better, day by day.

On a more personal note, I was delighted to be recognised by Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, for my work leading the All Party Parliamentary Group on Baby Loss. This year has seen great strides forward in how we handle this issue. We have passed the Parental Bereavement Act which for the first time guarantees in law the right to paid time off for those who lose a child. We have also seen the Government support the National Bereavement Care Pathway, which helps support people through the process of losing a child under 18. These are steps that will have a huge impact on those affected and show how we are building a more humane, caring society.

Let me end by saying thank you to all of you who are signed up to my newsletter. I hope that you have had a lovely Christmas and that you all have a wonderful new year. I look forward to hearing from a lot of you in 2019. As always, if you need to get in touch please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail on antoinette.sandbach.mp@parliament.uk.
