Joint replacement

News of tennis player Andy Murray's hip surgery has recently made the headlines. The tennis player described how post-surgery he is now able to walk without pain for the first time in 18 months. For those who require it, joint replacement surgery improves the pain and general quality of life in many people who suffer with advanced arthritis.

To further improve the outcome of any joint replacement, patients should always consider the role of physiotherapy both pre and post surgery. Physiotherapy can help prepare a patient before surgery. Post operatively, a physiotherapist uses techniques which improve healing, relieve pain and aim to restore range of motion in the joint and in areas which have compensated for the affected area.

In the latter stages of rehabilitation, physiotherapy helps to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint to provide further stability and improve functional use. If you are considering the prospect of joint replacement surgery have a chat with Audlem Physiotherapist Philippa to discuss how physiotherapy can help you.
