The club season kicked off in spectacular fashion today as 36 players gathered for the Friendly Doubles. The green was buzzing with energy, particularly with the inclusion of several brand new bowlers. Seeing members who have never bowled before stepping up to compete alongside the veterans was a highlight for everyone involved, and the "friendly" label quickly gave way to some extremely competitive round-robin action.
A massive thanks must go to Lesley for her superb organization of this event. From managing the draw for 36 participants to keeping the rounds flowing seamlessly, her hard work ensured the day was a resounding success.
The semi-finals were played side-by-side on the green, offering spectators two very different displays of Crown Green Bowls at the exact same time:
The Tie-Break Thriller: Ursula and "Young James" (Jim) faced off against Glyn and Graham T in a match that simply couldn't be settled within the regulation ends. Locked at 7 7, the match moved to a high-stakes extra end. Ursula and Jim found their line at the perfect moment, scoring 3 out of 4 chalks to punch their ticket to the final on a massive high.
The Clinical Masterclass: The adjacent game Geof and Andy were the absolute picture of consistency. They ended the hopes of Pam and Adam with a commanding 15 4 victory, "striding" into the final with serious momentum and clinical precision.
The final showdown between Ursula & Jim and Geof & Andy kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. While the weather remained cloudy, the "warmth" of the competition was more than enough to keep the March chill at bay.
The match was "nip and tuck" throughout, and by the tenth end, the scores were a dead heat at 6 across. The story of the day, however, was Andy Watson. Having recently recovered from two knee replacements and a new hip, Andy s performance was a masterclass in steely determination (and perhaps a little help from his chemist!).
The Result: With the scores level at 6-across on the final end, Andy Watson delivered a clinical final wood to clinch the title. The winning shot was met with a burst of delighted fist-pumping from his partner, Geof, as they secured the first club trophy of the season in the closest of contests.
Looking Ahead
The bar has been set high for the year! Our next club competition is scheduled for Sunday, March 22nd. After today s display of talent and grit, it is already eagerly anticipated by all members.
Best regards
