Boots

Yesterday while out for a walk
I saw something
To gladden my heart

First I heard voices.
A young b voice and a "grown up" voice,
And the clicking of boots
On the pavement, -
Coming behind me as I walked

The voices and the clicking boots
Crossed the road
So, I could see them
As well hear them.

There, walking at speed, was a young lad and his Dad
The little lad taking the lead.

The youngster, wearing with pride
What I imagined to be
A pair of new football boots!
He clutched to his chest – a bottle -
Water, perhaps for half time?

They went towards the playing field
So I lost sight of them both
But I was smiling as I carried on walking,
Thinking of my own lads, when they were young
I even remember the sound of clacking boots!
Where would life be without our memories
