Audlem resident Jean Caine has a letter published in this week's Chronicle where she puts up a robust defence of Cheshire as the debate over local council re-organisation gets well underway (see Audlem Online reports last week). She says:

"It is not democracy if the people of Cheshire cannot choose the way local government is carried out. As far as I am concerned the present government has made a total mess of everything they have touched and I wish they would leave local matters as they stand."

"There is absolutely nothing wrong in local government as it is now and if anybody is foolish enough to believe a single system or this 'split into two' system will save money and cut Council Tax, I suggest they think again."

"I have had problems sorted out by people in Crewe with courtesy and speed. I want to feel they are there for me again in the future. To be in the same 'half of the county' as Wilmslow, Poynton and Disley etc. fills me with apprehension. Nothing wrong with those places, but they are far too near to 'greedy' Manchester and it has been quoted in the Chronicle, the future holds the risk of becoming part of Greater Manchester."

"Cheshire is a fine county in her own right. I am Cheshire born, bred and proud of it. Keep things as they are."

What do you think of the proposal to split Cheshire in to two unitary authorities – East Cheshire, where Audlem will sit, and West Cheshire? A new Forum has started on Audlem Online. Click on Forum on the top horizontal bar and then on the question.
