It was safety to the fore last week on Audlem Lass, the new boat that will ply the canal between Audlem and Overwater Marina from 22nd April.

Audlem residents Denis and Janet Farmer, who are committee members of the IWA, the Inland Waterways Association, presented Audlem Lass operator Rod Cottrell with the funding to buy a dozen lifejackets for the boat.

The money was kindly donated to the IWA by Miss Jean Evans.

Seven volunteer coxswains have now been recruited to operate Audlem Lass throughout the summer season – and no, they don't include Avril Fouliere, as featured in our story on Friday morning!

Audlem Lass will be providing a scheduled service at weekends from 9.30am at Overwater Marina and a return trip from Audlem's Lock 15 at 9.45am. Then it's on the half hour and hour from the marina and the quarter and three quarter hour from the lock.

Profits from this service will be donated to the RNLI, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the charity that Rod has supported for many years with collections and sales of goods throughout the local area.
