The History Society speaker on May 21st in the Scout and Guide Hall is the Rev. Canon Darrel Speedy.

He has been priest in charge since 2001 of the small village of Barthomley, near Alsager. His subject is its Historic Events, including the massacre of 12 Parliamentarians during the Civil War, when they took refuge in the church tower.

Barthomley has a long history as originally a vast parish encompassing Crewe and Alsager, and has the only known church dedicated to St. Bertoline.

Darrel previously served in Whaley Bridge, on the edge of the Peak District, well known for its summer festival and well dressing; before that in the remote north of Scotland and in the diocese of Lincoln.

On Friday, June 12th, there is a Car Outing to Barthomley, starting with morning coffee in the rectory, arranged by the Rev. Angela Speedy.

Then we have a tour of the outstanding church, followed by lunch at the traditional black-and-white pub the White Lion, before going on down the road to Englesea Brook, for a visit to the Primitive Methodist Church Museum and its Flower festival.
