The local Homewatch Co-ordinator has sent the following message about ironwork thefts on Cheshire's rural roads:

"Cheshire East Council's Highways Operations has been made aware of a spate of ironwork thefts in rural areas.

"A number of gully gratings have been taken from areas of Beeston, Bickerton, Bulkeley and Peckforton in the past week.

"The missing gully gratings pose a serious danger to roads users and pedestrians.

"Cheshire East Council is urging local residents to remain vigilant and report any such thefts or anything suspicious via Highways Operations on 0845 0002 666.

"Alternatively, such thefts can be reported to Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 using the incident number 188 ( May 18, 2010).

"Cheshire East Councillor, Rod Menlove, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Environmental Services, said:

'Those committing such a senseless crime must be stopped as soon as possible. The theft of gully gratings creates a serious danger on local roads.

'In addition to the obvious dangers, replacing the stolen grates comes at a significant cost to the Highway Authority. I would appeal to local residents to report anything suspicious.' "
