Last week Audlem Online reported that a refund could be due to those residents who had opted to use Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's "brown bin" garden waste service. This is because the service is currently not covered in the standard Council Tax charge. Instead, those residents who opted to receive a brown bin had to pay an extra £23 for the period from 1st August 2008 to 31st July 2009.

As from 1st April, when Cheshire East replaces the Borough Council, the cost of the garden waste service will become part of the standard Council Tax. In other words it will be "free", like the black and grey bin collections.

We stated that a regular contributor had contacted the Borough Council to ask how the refund of £7.67 for the period from 1st April to 31st July will be paid. We can now report that a response has been received. It says "... I have made further enquiries and can confirm Cheshire East Council will be looking into the issue regarding refunds for customers captured in the August 08 – July 09 service payment period. I ... can confirm that you will be contacted as soon as possible."

We will keep you in touch with developments on this matter.
