A full transcript of the talk which George Dow gave to the History Society in 1981 has been discovered in the cellars of the History Society Repository, and all of it has now been added to the online Archive.

The talk was on the subject of Local Railways and George's description of the railway which used to serve Audlem, and the sad story of its demise as part of the Beeching cuts, make fascinating reading.

George interviewed local people who worked on the railways and included much of that material, so it is a vital record of those people and probably the only written reference to them.

Among the names which crop up towards the end of the document (pages 16-19 especially) are Hendleys, Hopkins etc.

Unfortunately the slides with which George embellished his talk have not come to light – if anybody knows where they are or has a copy of them, the History Society would be very pleased to reunite them with the script of the talk.

You can get to the archive by clicking here, and then the keyword "Dow" will take you to the several items that relate to George Dow.
