The Audlem Ramblers Society's first Mid-ARS walk is this coming Saturday (16th May) and will be around the Bishops Castle area.

As explained previously, Mid ARS walks are intended (as the name suggests!) to be a step up from our Short walks, but below the level of our Long walks and will hopefully fill a gap in our programme.

It is intended that they will take place on the 3rd Saturday of the month, in those months that have five Saturdays – May, August and October this year.

Our first walk is being organised by Chris and Jackie and below is their description.

Oakeley Mynd, Lydbury North and Walcot woods from Bishops's Castle

This walk starts from the centre of Bishop's Castle (the livestock Auction free car park) and heads out across fields before gradually ascending Oakeley Mynd.

The route continues along the top with views over the Shropshire hills before descending to the hamlet of Totterton and then onto Lydbury North. Here we have the option of completing a shorter 6.5 mile circular walk back to Bishop's Castle over the gentler side of Oakley Mynd.

The longer route continues to skirt around Walcot Manor and joins the Shropshire Way climbing beside the ancient Walcot woodland to finish at the car park at Bury Ditches. The full walk is 8 miles with 1000 feet ascent.

Many of the stiles have adjacent gaps or field fences for dog walkers. There will be some fields with sheep, perhaps cattle.

We will need to park a car at Bury Ditches to ferry drivers to reclaim their cars from Bishop's Castle. This will give others the opportunity of exploring the Bury Ditches earthworks.

It's about an hour and 15 mins drive from Audlem so an 8.30am start from the car park.

If you haven't been to Bishop's Castle before there are some quirky, interesting shops, pubs and tea rooms to explore. And if anyone wants a full weekend walking their walking festival is on at the moment.
