Audlem Online readers that have been following the progess of the Cheshire Fire Cadets, including three representatives from Audlem, will be interested to hear that the Ghana 2009 party arrived home safe and sound on Sunday afternoon, August 9th, after an overnight journey from Accra in Ghana. The fire cadets team report:

"The 14 Cadets have had an exciting and demanding two weeks in Ghana with some overwhelming and emotional moments during the project. The Cadets worked very well as individuals and as a team, both on the building work and on establishing good relationships with the villagers and wider community of Adeklu.

"Despite the climate and the difficult roads, the school was completed on time and opened by the Ghanaian government Education Minister. This meant that the work of the Fire Cadets was covered on the national news in Ghana. We were unaware of this until staff at the airport recognised us, greeted us warmly and thanked the Cadets for their contribution to Ghana. This was particularly helpful as it gave us a 'wave through' at the custom post when others were being asked to open their cases!

"The Cadets also had the opportunity to meet the new Chief Officer of the Ghana National Fire & Rescue Service at the HQ in Accra. Chief William explained that in his first year as national Chief, one of the elements of his business plan is to form 5 Cadet units in Accra as he has seen the benefits to the service of young advocates in the form of Cadets.

"Cheshire Fire Cadets – our young people – have now been responsible for building three schools in rural impoverished African communities – which is quite an amazing achievement. They should be proud of their efforts and the positive image they present of our youth today."
