Audlem firefighters were called out at around 10 pm last night to put out a fire where rubbish was burning close to a British Waterways container in the car park next to the Public Hall. The container, which was situated near a portacabin being used as an office while they carry out repair work on the canal, was in a fenced-off area at the top end of the car park. Thanks to the quick response of the local firefighters, the flames were quickly brought under control, and a more serious incident was avoided. How much worse could it have been if Audlem didn't have its own retained firefighters and a fire appliance to hand?

It appears that the fire may have been started deliberately, although this has not yet been confirmed. If anyone has any information about the incident please contact our local policeman, Ken Maple, at 0845 458 6378 (Voicemail)
