Fine Festival – pity about the weather

The dire weather forecast for yesterday turned out to be right. Yet, despite the rain, about 250 classic vehicles still turned up for the Audlem Festival of Transport. And thousands of spectators enjoyed the parade through Audlem during a welcome lull in the monsoon weather.

The numbers turning out on a soggy, dull day is a credit to all involved and testimony to the appeal of ASET events in the village. Unfortunately, one of the highlights of the day, the Spitfire, was unable to perform over Audlem – not because of local conditions but because of strong sidewinds in Lincolnshire and a storm brewing there preventing takeoff and possibly a later landing.

As well as the splendid display of vehicles, minus naturally many of the older open-top cars, the flotilla of historic boats moored outside the Mill Shop were an added attraction. Any curious visitor who accepted the invitation to go onboard would have learnt much about life on a working narrow boat.

It's now two Sundays in a row that major local events have been knocked by the lousy summer weather. Last weekend was even worse with torrential downpours affecting the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power. The cancellation that day of the power boat event – yes 'power boat' – because it was too wet, says it all.

The good news is that a hose pipe ban this summer gets less and less likely by the day!
