Cheshire East Council received 1,196 complaints last year, a drop of 12% (197) on the previous year.

The most frequent complaints made through the council's customer feedback service were on waste collection, potholes, telephone line opening hours, care planning for adults and children and access to case officers in planning applications.

There was a substantial rise in complaints about highways and transportation last year at 254 compared to just 67 in 2001-12, then again the number of compliments rose from two in 2011-12 to 27 last year.

A total of 68 complaints about Cheshire East were made to the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) in 2012-13 which compares with 179 the previous year.

The ombudsman found that in the great majority (87%) of complaints there was no evidence of maladministration or injustice by the council.

Local settlements were reached in nine cases with two of these relating to the same planning issue, according to a report to the councils Corporate Scrutiny Committee.

The number of complaints referred to the LGO puts Cheshire East in the upper half of table compared to other local authorities.

The highest number of complaints were against Cornwall with 130 and the lowest in Rutland with three. The average is 39, over a period when the LGO investigated 63 complains against Cheshire East
