This is a summary of the rules covering the mandatory use of face-covering whilst in shops, provided by Judy Evans of Williams Newsagents

As from Friday 24th of July it will be mandatory to wear a face covering whilst in shops and supermarkets in England (different rules may apply to Wales, Scotland & N. Ireland).
There are some key exceptions :

  • Shop workers/ keepers
  • Children under 11 years
  • People with breathing difficulties or specific medical conditions
  • Persons accompanying people who rely on lip reading.

Under the new rules, people who do not wear a face covering will face a fine of up to £100 (reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days), in line with the sanction on public transport and just as with public transport.

The liability for wearing a face covering lies with the individual.

Should an individual without an exemption refuse to wear a face covering, a shop can refuse them entry and can call the police if people refuse to comply. Only the police have the formal enforcement powers and can issue a fine.

People are discouraged from wearing medical face masks. Home made face masks, scarves, neckerchieves, or similar, are all acceptable as long as they cover both the nose, and the mouth.

NOTE Wearing a face covering is not a substitute for maintaining social distance, and regular hand washing.
