With the furore about MPs' expenses still raging, it's good to be passed an expenses story by Judy at Williams' newsagents about one of mankind's greatest scientific achievements.

Buzz Aldrin was the second man to step on the moon in 1969, just twenty minutes after Neil Armstrong was the very first to walk on the moon's surface. On his return to Earth, Buzz Aldrin duly filed his expenses to his boss at NASA. His expense sheet said:

  • Payee's Name: Col. Edwin E Aldrin 00018
  • From: Houston Texas
  • To: Cape Kennedy, FLA; Moon; Pacific Ocean
  • Amount claimed: $33.31
Just that. He had an 'Away-from-Home' allowance of $10 a day and had been away for 3.3 days!
