With such a momentous Referendum decision coming up on 23rd June, Audlem this year will drop its annual display of almost sixty Union (Jack) flags. Instead the village will be bedecked with European Union flags.

This will probably mean Audlem is displaying more European flags in one village than any other community in the country, indeed, possibly more than all the others put together!

Audlem Flag Operations & Organisational Leader, Avril Drapeau, says: "There was a spirited debate about this when our team met but, with my obvious European background and coming from Brussels as I do, I am glad to say I was able to democratically over-rule the rest of them."

"We did debate alternating the European flag with those of each of the 28 EU nations, with the Union flag flying proudly from St James' church tower as a negotiated opt-out, but the expense and sheer complication of that ruled it out. Anyway, have your ever tried to buy a Luxembourger tricolour or make a Maltese cross?"
