The battle of Blore Heath came in for some attention in respect of the proposed ARS walk – see yesterday's story on Audlem Online.

It is, of course, recorded that Queen Margaret of Anjou witnessed the battle from Muckleston and subsequently scarpered with some of the enemy in hot pursuit

To aid the departure and to put off the enemy trackers, she is said to have asked the Muckleston Smithy to turn the shoes of her horse around to face the wrong way and refix them.

To commemorate this deed, there is an anvil in the church yard and a plaque on the wall of the Smith's house opposite the anvil recording the occasion.

It must have been a successful ploy as she got away....which is more than can be said for her army who were soundly beaten.
