EMYJO, NSPCC and the Glenn Muller sound

A large and enthusiastic audience enjoyed the Big Band sound of the EMYJO

(East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra) at a performance in the Public Hall last

night. The event was in aid of the NSPCC and sponsored by Muller

Developments.

The youthful and very talented members of the band produced a truly authentic

Big Band sound, including various solo items – perhaps the highlight of the

evening was a rousing solo drum performance which seemed to involve using

every hard surface in the body of the Hall as an instrument – it was just as

well that Olive was not there to see her beloved Hall floor used as a

sounding board!

There were several relaxed vocal items by a couple of the young lads in the

Band, who looked just old enough to be in the Church choir, but produced a

Sinatra-like sound way beyond their years.

The Band, who have appeared at the London Jazz Festival and are veterans of

several foreign tours to Canada and other places, are about to change their

name from EMYJO to the rather more catchy "HotHouse". We wish them well – if

their ongoing performances reflect the one Audlem was privileged to hear last

night, then a successful future is assured.

Mention should also be made of the meal provided for the event using the new

Hall kitchen facilities under the supervison of Paul Ratcliffe – the main

course was a choice of salmon or chicken in a tasty sauce, beautifully

presented with nicely cooked vegetables.

So thankyou to the NSPCC support group (and to Michelle Perkins who persuaded

the Band to come to Audlem) for a very good night out.
