Campaigners for and against an elected mayor in Crewe & Nantwich Borough have been putting forward their case. The elected mayor system, already in place in London and as near as Stoke-on-Trent, would see the council controlled by a political leader voted into power directly by residents.

Trade Union leaders representing council workers have warned voters an elected mayor in the borough could cost over £1 million. The Memorial Action Team, however, has gathered 4,000 signatures with the result that there will be a referendum on the issue on 4th May, the same day as the local elections. If the vote is 'Yes' it will pave the way for mayoral elections in October this year.

Even if a mayor is elected, argues Peter Kent, the Labour leader of Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council, it could be a short lived job. The Government is planning a major re-organisation of local government which, he says, could result in the Borough no longer existing after 2008.
