Does Scottish Power know something?

Earlier this month, Scottish Power – we wonder if they have a sister company called English Power operating in Scotland – installed 140 new wooden poles carrying electricity cables around Audlem.

Interestingly, all those poles to the east of the village carry a safety warning in English while those to the west, such as this one photographed in Whitchurch Road about 300m from the village centre, carry the warning in Welsh too – 'Perygl o Farwolaeth'.

Regular readers will recall on this very day five years ago we carried a story suggesting that Audlem had applied to become part of Wales. That was followed by an AudlemOnline Votepoll that produced a majority in favour of the idea.

The story went all round the world and resulted in five TV programmes, national and international radio, and full page coverage in a national newspaper.

Does Scottish Power, in some curious demonstration of Celtic solidarity, know something us innocent English do not. Is the international border to be shifted with perhaps the canal the new dividing line between England and Wales slap bang in the middle of Audlem?

And if not, why the Welsh signs on so many poles?
