C&RT Volunteers February Report

As normal the Volunteer Lock Keepers / Lock Rangers met at their covered accommodation adjacent to the Audlem Mill Shop for the February Task Force Day.

The weather could be termed as 'Slightly inclement' thank you to the 'Storm Erik' advertised as heading our way. Damp under foot but full of enthusiasm the 10 members of the team on duty today were familiarised with the 'day's' programme of work.

We headed up to the embankment area just above lock 12, next to the towpath, the people at work signs were displayed and work commenced in clearing the bank area of dead undergrowth and various items of rubbish hidden in the undergrowth (Obviously the items of rubbish were removed back to our wheely bin area for disposal by the C&RT contractor)

Our Full Time Team Leader then requested the team split into 2 groups, one to carry on with clearing the embankment and the other smaller group to focus on clearing the flight of steps that lead down from the canal to the 'under canal culvert' that allows the C&RT inspection team access to the stream / river directly below the canal between lock 12 and 11. This job has been completed, please see photographs.

Work on clearing the embankment was progressing well with a small 'fleet of wheelbarrows' removing the undergrowth, then without warning the 'misty drizzle' became a 'total down pour of rain'

A hasty meeting took place and the team picked up all of their equipment and headed back to the shelter of our covered accommodation, we were all 'soaked' so the hot tea and coffee waiting for us was all the more welcome, topped off with hot sausage rolls (Too wet for cooking bacon rolls today in the fresh air)

As normal our next planned Task Force Day will be on Friday 8th March but you will find members of the team on duty most days lock keeping on the Audlem Flight.
