Regular readers will remember that earlier this year, during February and March, Audlem Online ran a vote poll asking whether Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council should be abolished. The result was that 59% were in favour of abolition, 38% against and 3% unsure.

It is not known whether the Government or their advisers number among our readers, but they have just recommended that local government in Cheshire be transformed. The proposal is that all existing district councils and the county council should be scrapped and replaced by two unitary authorities – East Cheshire and West Cheshire.

Under the proposal, the existing councils of Crewe and Nantwich, Congleton and Macclesfield will form East Cheshire, whilst Ellesmere Port and Neston, Chester and Vale Royal will make up West Cheshire. Before making the final decision, the Government has asked for further work to be done on the affordability of the changes.

Should the proposal go ahead, the new authorities will come into being in April 2009.
