Every year as part of our ADAS community work, we give to each pupil at Audlem St James' school, from nursery to year 6, a plant to grow on throughout the summer holidays.

In the past I have given them Sunflowers, Marrows, Gourds and Pumpkins. This year it was Sweet Corn and at the end of May I gave each child four plant seedlings.

Last Monday, I attended assembly to present prizes for the best efforts of each year. It is a wonderful thing that we do with the children, encouraging them to take part in the community in this way.

The sight of all the children trooping in to assembly and sitting very quietly in front of me is truly a moving sight. So many bright eyes. I then discussed all the growing of the cobs and the way to enjoy eating them.

The selected winners are seen in the accompanying photo. Reading from left to right, we have Seth Hardy (Yr6), Sara Warrington (Yr3), Helen Marshall (Yr2) Gracie Reece-Gresty (Yr1) Ben Cope (Yr4), and Thomas Spooner (Yr5).

Maisie Goodwin of Reception also won but was not at Morning Assembly.

Next year the project will be to grow an onion to gain the praise of Wallace & Grommet!
