A local correspondent writes: "A BBC report this morning, which suggests that hospital bugs are spread as much by airbourne contamination as otherwise, has prompted me to send this note. Walking past the uncovered sewer off Vicarage Lane one can often hear the water running through it. Splashing water creates an aerosol which spreads into the air and if there are germs in the sewer they will be in the air which passers-by breathe."

"People who need to know about this problem do know about it, but nothing gets done. The Sanitary Inspectors of the last century would not have let this pass – they would have been out to it the next day."
