Community Garden grows and grows

The new Community Gardens down at Lock 15 are coming on a treat. Work only started in June yet vegetables and salads are coming through at a pace.

The first of the gardens was dug over and planted by Adrian and Geraldine Leighton. Our first photo shows the plot from across the canal and was taken on 15th June. The second shot shows the garden as it is now.

Half a dozen other gardeners have been digging out plots and planting crops and have been finding it very sociable, chatting to passing boaters who all seem enthusiastic about this new cultivated entrance to Audlem from the north.

The land has been leased from British Waterways by Danny and Amy George who have their shop – possibly the smallest in England – at the bottom of the locks where they sell pork, sausages, fruit and vegetables.

There's still space for a couple more gardens. No rent is involved but gardeners can offer any surplus crops to Danny and Amy to sell to passing boaters and walkers.

Danny is keen that anyone taking a plot will grow a row of flowers at the 'canal side' of each plots and he has already heard many positive comments about how the gardens are developing.

If you are interested, pop down to the George's Pork & Poultry shop at Lock 15 and discuss it with Danny, or give him a call on 07814 080173.
