Audlem Online received recently a query from a reader about how the 'Clock Appeal' was going on.

One of the appeal's organisers, Ruth Kemble, says: "The Clock fund stands at £5,500 and is safely held – and ring fenced – in the Church accounts. We are going back to the companies who gave us estimates for an update and we will, I should imagine, be looking for further funding. I am researching Trusts who support this kind of project."

The Clock will celebrate its Centenary in 2011. It is not too late to make a donation and cheques should be made payable to "Audlem PCC" These can be sent to either Christine Johnson at 16 Shropshire St, Audlem or Ruth Kemble, Plum Tree Cottage, Kettle Lane, Audlem.

Anyone who would like to visit the Clock (and the Bells) should contact Christine on 811774 or Ruth on 811887.

Regular readers may recall that in 2007 Audlem Online ran a competition to find a better name for the 'The Audlem St James' Church Clock Automatic Winding Mechanism Fund Raising Appeal'. The shorter ACCCA (Audlem Church Clock Centenary Appeal) emerged although some creative alternatives were suggested!

The money raised will pay for a new mechanism to replace the clock's now 99-year old manual winding gear. This requires, we are told, 275 windings a week, carried out on a Thursday, to keep the clock going.
