In case you've noticed, there's currently no flag on top of the church tower. It was taken down on Friday, before the arrival of storm Bert.
Storms, the ensuing strong winds and especially when combined with cold weather, tend to inflict the worst of damage on flags. Good flags are normally made out of polyester, which seemingly becomes more brittle and vulnerable to tear at lower temperatures. The flags hoisted on the tower, that are normally purchased off donations from members of the public, are of the highest of quality but not indestructible. At the edge of the flag there is what's called 'an anti-fraying net' to break the tug of the wind and to take the brunt of the damage and which nets are easily replaceable. But still, a good storm can eat through the net and damage the flag.
The flag will be hoisted back up by the end of the coming week.
