Chronicle features Audlem stories

This week's Chronicle features two major Audlem stories – Isobel Sykes award of an MBE in the New Year's Honours list and the Parish Council submitting its thoughts to the Ordnance Survey which is planning to re-draw its satellite navigation routes. It is hoped this might be a step forward in the campaign to steer HGVs away from Audlem's crowded and narrow streets.

Local residents were delighted to hear of Isobel's recognition. She has been a part-time firefighter and cadet unit leader in Audlem for 18 years and also works tirelessly full-time with the Prince's Trust.

Isobel, of Whitcurch Road, said: "This was a very big shock but a nice one nonetheless. I am very grateful to those who put me forward. I couldn't have achieved it without the help of the Prince's Trust team and my husband and family."

Isobel has been involved in 21 Prince's Trust projects in the past eight years which have all led to holidays for groups of disadvantaged children. The Fire Service is an active partner of the Trust.

Parish Councillors Mike Hill and Bill Consterdine are pictured in the Ordnance Survey mapping story. They are standing in the very narrow stretch of Stafford Street opposite the Church steps, a street that takes a good proportion of Ireland's trade with Europe as well as that of the industrial estates of Whitchurch, Wrexham and North Wales. Haulage companies from Eastern Europe seem to send their trucks through Audlem in large numbers, almost certainly as a result of the satellite navigation systems.

The situation has worsened in recent weeks with the opening of the new Co-op, where a delivery van, or even cars parked outside the shop, can bring the village (and Ireland's international links with the rest of the world) to a standstill.
