The Burleydam and District W.I. meeting on February 1st was treated to a very interesting talk by Trevor Mooney from Chatwins the Bakers.

He took us through the history of this family run bakery which has been situated on Market Street in Nantwich for almost 100 years! They will celebrate their centenary in 2013 as long as we, the customers, keep buying their goods.

Trevor and trainee speaker, Rachel, brought a selection of amazingly worked occasion cakes to show us. There was a witch sitting over a bubbling cauldron for Hallowe'en, Wallace and Grommit sitting on armchairs reading the newspaper for a birthday celebration and a pink sparkly cake adorned with animal characters, obviously for a little princess's party.

With our cup of tea we were treated to a wonderful assortment of Chatwin fancy cakes.

Joyce Cross was presented with the gift of a cookery book from our partner CWA group in Tasmania which she had won in the raffle. Members were made aware of the dangers of Chinese lanterns which can be a hazard to livestock and even aeroplanes and voted for an outright ban.

The competition was a war medal and Liz Gentil took first prize, Margaret Blackburn 2nd and Karen Gee 3rd. The next meeting is on March 1st when the speaker is Derek Innskeep on the topic 'Wings of White Linen' and the competition is 'a decorated cupcake'.
