Those involved in the national Defra award that Audlem won in 2005 – when the village was judged the Best Village in England for Community Spirit – may remember Celia Webber, one of the judges.

Celia is pulling on her walking boots during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to fundraise for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. She will be walking 83.3 miles of towpath from Ellesmere Port, her home, to Birmingham via Audlem and some of the way back.

Celia's 'Towpath Trundle' will take place between 17th and 30th October and will be arriving in Audlem on 19th October. She says: "For anyone who is interested, the boat Llangollen Navigator will arrive in Audlem slightly before me on the Tuesday evening and we shall all relax in the Shroppie Fly for the rest of the night.

"We should be noticeable – some of us in shocking pink! We leave Audlem at 10.00am the following day but, no doubt, it will take us a while to get through the locks."

Celia's Merry Men63 year old Celia will be followed along the way by a crew of merry men on the canal boat generously sponsored by Welsh Gateway Canal Holidays. Like a pink pied piper, she is also encouraging people along the route to don some pink and join in the fun.

The crew, adorned in their finest pink threads, will be fundraising along the way by asking people to donate to collection cans Celia will be carrying.

Celia says: "Not only have I had breast cancer myself but members of my close family have also battled the disease so it's a cause that is incredibly close to my heart. I have seen first hand the benefit of Breakthrough Breast Cancer's work and want to continue to raise vital money whilst having fun and involving other people along the way."

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with nearly 46,000 women and around 300 men diagnosed with the disease each year. All the money raised from the event will help Breakthrough Breast Cancer continue to fund groundbreaking research, campaign for better services and treatments and raise awareness of breast cancer.

Through this work the charity believes passionately that the disease can be beaten and the fear of breast cancer removed for good.
