Carols around the Big Tree

Despite pouring rain and a blustery wind roaring up Stafford Street, a surprisingly large number turned out for the traditional Carols around the Big Tree in the Square last night.

Organised by ADAS, the Audlem District Amenities Society, it is always a heart-warming event and the singing of the carols was a lusty as ever as residents braved the elements.

The Crewe Brass Band, playing at the event for the 26th time, sensibly played in the shelter of the Buttermarket this year and were on top form and their performance attracted rousing appreciation.

The mayor of Cheshire East, Cllr Dorothy Flude, and her consort, were in attendance and were warmly welcomed.

Bill Consterdine kept the singers entertained between numbers as the brass band caught their breath, telling all of the numerous awards the village has received this year, notably the Best Kept Village Championship for the whole of Cheshire.

Hot soup provided by Allan and Jo of the Lord Combermere was particularly welcome.

Fortunately, the worst of last night's weather arrived just after the singing ended, by which time many had sought shelter in the pub or were off home and, hopefully, a welcoming fire to dry out by.
