We at Audlem Mill are so excited to have received from the printers a new book by Jane Marshall of The Old Stables at the bottom of the Audlem flight of locks.
"Roses & Castles" is a superb practical guide to canal boat decoration. The difference between Jane's book and others is that it uniquely combines both the historical background and how to paint the roses and castles.Besides being one half of the superb Day-Star Theatre group who put on occasional plays at the Scout & Guide Hall, which we are sure most people in the village have enjoyed, Jane has also been painting roses & castles for many years.
She has been running regular weekend roses & castles courses for around 20 years, which have bought hundreds of visitors to the village. Jane's painted work has been available at Audlem Mill for many years, and we always have many examples for sale – and commissions can be taken.Jane's fully illustrated book "Roses & Castles" looks at the history of the colourful decoration that has appeared on canal narrow boats for nearly 200 years, and at the different styles that have developed across the canals of England. She also covers the master craftsmen of the past, and many of the present day people who perpetuate this long-standing tradition- including Audlem resident Roger Wickson.
The second part of Jane's book gives very practical guidance on how to paint roses and castles, lettering, and graining techniques (known as 'scumbling' on canal boats), and is based on her course material. "Roses & Castles" has been published locally, by CanalBookShop at Audlem Mill. Peter and Chris Silvester have published 14 canal related books over the last five years.
The book is available at Audlem Mill, open every day from 9:00 to 5:00, or from our website
