We would like to follow up the piece yesterday about the British Waterways Volunteers, by saying that a little while ago, British Waterways Chief Executive Robin Evans honoured them with a Waterways Excellence Award to reflect all the work that they are doing here in Audlem.

A photograph of the award certificate is shown here, as is a photo with two of the volunteers, Dek Owen and David Williams, along with BW staff, including Wendy Capelle on the right, the Waterways Manager for Wales and the Border Counties.  Unfortunately, the third volunteer, Joe Halligan, was not able to make the photo shoot.

May we record our gratitude to the volunteers, who give up a lot of their time for the benefit of canal users and Audlem.

Besides helping boats through the locks and keeping the area around the locks tidy, they are very good at recommending to boat crews to moor up in Audlem and spend an hour or two visiting the shops, cafés and pubs.

Local business people remember only too well how terrible trade was two years ago when the canal was closed due to a breach, and realise that were it not for canal tourism, many of the shops in Audlem would not survive for long.

These three volunteers are to be congratulated for doing so much to promote local trade!
