Members were saddened to hear of the death, after a short illness, of Ann Blackburn. Ann had many skills and interests including floristry and, only last December, had designed and made the flower basket presented to Sheila Beeston.

The March meeting was billed as a Members' Craft Evening which provided a range of activities. Demonstrations of basket making using plastic washing line, cross stitch and sugar craft were given by Liz Gentil, Margaret Blackburn and Jean Cornes.

Sheila Beeston, Jean Birchall and Carolyn Wilde brought examples of knitting, embroidery and pottery for members to look at.

Liz Gentil had attended the Cheshire Federation's Annual Council Meeting at Winsford that day and gave a report of the highlights. The resolution, which had been debated quite fiercely at our previous meeting, was carried but not without a fair number of votes against.

The Chief Constable of Cheshire, David Whatton and the National Chairman of the NFWI, Ruth Bond, had been the speakers. Ruth, particularly, had impressed Liz with her down to earth, friendly approach.

Out of AfricaThe March competition was "Something out of Africa" which was judged this time by the "Pennies for Friendship" system. Pennies for friendship go to help the work of Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), a global charity to which the NFWI is affiliated.

WIs are therefore allowed, under Charity Commission rules, to raise money for this charity. Members vote by putting money against the item they think should win and the one that raises the most money wins. On this occasion new members Joyce Cross and Karen Gee came first and second and Sarah Lunt and Carolyn Wilde were joint third.

The 6th April meeting will see the welcome return of Graham Dodd who will be speaking on a Journey to the Bottom of the Sea.
