It's that time again and, depending on when you are reading this, that can mean Christmas – writing cards – when is the last posting date? – planning menus – can I get a delivery slot from Tesco that does not necessitate setting the alarm for 4.30 in the morning?

Or it may be New Year – resolutions – shall I bother this year? – putting up the new calendar – entries in the 2011 diary done in extra neat writing. Just wait till February when the cat has left muddy paw prints all over the page. What is it about going to the dentist that by the time I get there in May I have left a trail of crossed out appointments across those snowy white pages?

Eleven dates can be put with certainty into any WI member's diary. Those are the dates of meetings for the year ahead. The first Tuesday of each month or the last Friday, the fourth Wednesday or the third Thursday; the pattern becomes engrained and another year is mapped out.

The December meeting, not surprisingly, usually takes on a Christmassy theme. There may be a Christmas Party or outing or a seasonal cookery demonstration or, as in the case of Burleydam WI this year, an opportunity to try one's hand at some form of craft.

In our case, Vice President, Margaret Blackburn, demonstrated making a Christmas table decoration and members were then encouraged to have a go. Margaret judged all the finished entries. The winner was Jenny Senior, second Gladys Burrough and third, new president, Elaine Walton. Elaine was also presented with the trophy for winning most points in the competitions over the year.

If it is now New Year and you are looking for a Resolution for 2011 what better one than deciding to join your local WI? You will be made very welcome.

I am now signing off after five years of writing these reports. I have enjoyed bringing the activities of our WI to a wider audience and hope you have enjoyed reading them. On behalf of members of Burleydam and District WI, may I wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
