Outdoor types will know where there are damson trees. This year there is a bumper crop and branches are weighed down with fruit.

While picking (5 bags so far), I have been asked what they are, whether they are grapes and had suggestions of jam, crumble and brandy recipes. They are also good for pickling and damson 'cheese' (puree then set).

It would be terrible if they go to waste – everyone should carry a few plastic bags with them – ten minutes is all it takes!

Suzanne Poole adds at 2.25pm. "With reference to today's article on damsons, there are a lot of damsons on the trees this year following last year's lack due to a 'bug'.

"Whilst I agree they should not go to waste, people should be aware before picking, that many of the trees in the hedgerows round and about the area are privately owned.

"Therefore picking without permission would of course be 'stealing'. Please check before helping yourself that the trees are not already owned and being picked!"
