Buerton School campaigners dispute County's 'savings'

Campaigning parents remain defiant as education chiefs are planning to axe Buerton school. Education chiefs say it will cost almost £280,000 to bring the school up to standard, but save £77,000 from the schools budget if it is axed. Villagers and parents have slammed the figures claiming they do not allow for the impact on the local community or other costs, such as transporting children to schools further away.

The education authority says the per pupil costs at Buerton are almost double the average and providing new facilities such as a school hall, kitchen and larger hard play area will be expensive. But parents disagree. Denise Lawson says: "Building these facilities is not necessary as we already share facilities with Bridgemere Primary. We believe the quality of the education our children receive here is worth any extra cost but we don't think the council's figures are accurate."

Parents were disappointed the public consultation with education officers did not answer many of their questions. They must now wait until 4th April for a decision on the proposed closure by Cheshire County Council. There is a fuller story on this issue in today's Nantwich Guardian.
