Thomas Paine
English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain.
Born January 29th 1736 (O.S.* – see below) in Thetford, Norfolk
Died June 8, 1809 in Greenwich Village, New York City
*O.S. dates refer to "Old style" dates, i.e. before the Julian to Gregorian calendar change in 1752, and the use of January 1st as the start of the year, rather than 25th March as previously.
