FROM “COMPUTER-SPEAK”
TO REAL-LIFE
WORDS & MUSIC

In recent weeks, Audlem Probus Club members have navigated such mindbending topics as 3D objects being made using computers, and what some might say are the “brain-busting” realms of Artificial Intelligence.

At this Thursday’s (Jan 22nd) presentation, we retired business and professional men and women can relax our brain-cells . . . it features story-telling and music!

Paul Thompson, a retired Classics teacher and author, will talk about Jake Thackray, whose songs and storytelling made him a household name in the sixties and seventies.
Paul describes Thackray, whom he regards as his musical hero, as “arguably one of our greatest, most original and least celebrated songwriters”.
Some of those songs will be performed by Paul, while accompanying himself with a guitar named “Nadine” once owned by Thackray.
One of Thackray’s songs was "Lah-Di-Dah", in which a prospective bridegroom assures his bride he loves her so much that he will try to be nice to her dreadful family.

As Paul says when describing Thackray’s remarkable life: “He became a household name and TV star through his performances on such programmes as Braden’s Week and That’s Life. He was a storytelling genius whose songs can be comic, irreverent, poignant, poetic and satirical.”

Having released archive CDs and DVDs of Thackray’s music, edited “Jake Thackray – The Unsung Writer”, an anthology of his prose writing, and coauthored the acclaimed biography, “Beware of the Bull – The Enigmatic Genius of Jake Thackray”, (included in the Daily Telegraph’s pick of the best music books of 2022), it’s difficult to imagine anyone better suited to tell the life-story of this gifted, yet troubled, man.

Join us for – “Beware of the Bull – The Enigmatic Genius of Jake Thackray” – from 10am, Jan 22nd, Audlem Public Hall. Guests and visitors welcome.
