The prestigious Hudson's Heritage Awards 2017 winners were announced on 14th March at The Goldsmith's Hall in London, and Combermere Abbey was included in the line-up of the nation's top heritage attractions.
The newly-restored North Wing B&B was winner of the 'Best Accommodation' category, and Bamburgh Castle was highly commended in the same category.
The Awards, established in 2011, were presented by Penelope, Viscountess Cobham, CBE, Chairman of VisitEngland. They celebrate the crème de la crème of heritage attractions across the UK, including historic houses, museums and gardens.
There were ten category winners in total, including 'Best Hotel', 'Best Family Day Out', 'Best Hidden Gem' and even 'Best Loo'. Norman Hudson, OBE, chaired the independent judging panel, among them the acclaimed television presenter and author, Lucinda Lambton.
Hudson's is a renowned publisher and heritage specialist, and 'Hudson's Historic Houses and Gardens' is Britain's bestselling guide of where to stay and visit, established for over 25 years.
The North Wing B&B is the admirable result of a £2m two-year long project and, much planning and campaigning beforehand, to rescue the once-crumbling Wing of the Grade One Abbey, and create a magnificent suite of rooms which is enjoyed by leisure guests, as well as Brides and Grooms on their first night of marriage. Highlights of the accommodation include sumptuous interiors by Nina Campbell, a magnificent master bedroom, luxurious ensuite bathroom, Tudor Study with historically important design features and an Italianate style private knot garden.
Those wishing to stay during the Bluebell season can book in for the 2 night Bluebell Nano Break, which is valid until May 15th, and costs from just £240 per room for both nights.
This is a beautiful time to explore the estate when areas of its woodland are carpeted with native bluebells. The estate's Bluebell Walk event will take place on Sunday, April 23rd – see website for more information.
